I was thinking about another challenge.
A sort of long jump , a a 50 ft track with a ramp at the end a gap, and then a target with a trash can in the middle. point score would be based on whether you get close to the can or (max points) in the can.

Re: New racing Challenge
Sat, May 21, 2005 - 6:21 PMThat makes me want to sing!!!
Lanley: Well, sir, there's nothing on Earth like a genuine, bono fide, electrified, six-car monorail! What'd I say?
Flanders: Monorail!
Lanley: What's it called?
Patty and Selma: Monorail!
Lanley: That's right - Monorail!
Hoover: I hear those those things are awfully loud.
Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud.
Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend?
Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend.
Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs?
Lanley: You'll all be given cushy jobs.
Grampa: Were you sent here by the devil?
Lanley: No, good sir, I'm on the level.
Chief Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can.
Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man! I swear it's Springfield's only choice! Throw up your hands and raise your voice!
Everyone: Monorail!
Lanley:What's it called?
Everyone: Monorail!
Lanley: Once Again!
Everyone: Monorail!
Marge: But Main Street's still all cracked and broken!
Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken.
Everyone: Monorail!
Monorail!
Monorail!
Monorail!
Homer: Mono...D'oh! -

actually, i was thinking a similar thing. but i was imaging the ramp curving to vertical and sending the machines straight up in the air. a free style ramp. you are judged by the aerial maneuvers your machine completes.
yes, it is likely a one shot deal. but power tools flying in the air is likely even more prone to catastrophe than power tools racing along a track.
the other one always mentioned is demo power tools. race from opposite ends to a finish line in the center.
kimric's target idea is good too.
i think we should all something like this this year. what would people like to do?

Re: New racing Challenge
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 12:16 AMAnother one might be the non rotateing ground interface class.
sawzall? nail gun?orbital sander?
I like the vertical chalenge idea. The acrobatics would be good if you cut power in the air. A saw with a brake would do some wild stuff. -

Re: New racing Challenge
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 10:11 PMthis is good kimric, as usual.
i like the non-rotating locomotion idea. many have discussed the automatic nail gun angled backward, leaving a trail of nails in the track and 20 minutes of pulling before the next race. very good. sawzall too. but how many of these are there?
we would also have to not allow propulsion ones in this class. but we really need a guide wire this year so propulsion based things are quite so dangerous.
i think i might do the 2x barrel 12 gauge shotgun on rollerskates, with plugs in both barrels, pinned behind hte line, this year. anyone know how to rate the allowable pressure in a barrel? if the "bullet" is essentially held in place as a "plug" and the gun itself has to accelerate off the "bullet", there is much more mass to move and the pressures will get much higher. maybe make shells with less gunpowder.
this sounds like a question for the nelsons. they must know something about guns. nelsons?

Re: New racing Challenge
Wed, August 17, 2005 - 12:31 AMYes... you'll probably want less powder in that shotgun.
And the slowest burning powder you can find (or make).
There will also be much more time for leakage around the
piston, so some form of piston ring seal might help too.
Hmmm.... that gives me an idea for another design.
What kind of guide wire did you have in mind?
It won't be any safer if a projectile is whipping around
on one of the severed ends of the guide wire.

Tue, September 6, 2005 - 4:34 PMAs a kid I would take COX engines, inside a metal hanger roll cage mounted to Tonka car, attached to a 30” like and a nail pounded into the asphalt. Does that count? -

Sounds like fun. Do they still make those 0.049 engines?
How long would it run on a tank of methanol / nitromethane?
What kind of prop did you use? Might be fun to tie the line
to a post or a hanging pig molded out of lard or something.

Re: New racing Challenge
Mon, October 3, 2005 - 6:03 PMI did somthing like that with a W-wacker engine and a 10" prop hanging from a 30' cable in a warehouse,it was terrifying. It moved really fast!

We tried it at that Lawrence science place and it did real good. Meaning, it almost made the machines destroy everything.
