shipyard shop/studio space for rent

The Shipyard, still recovering from a harrowing ontological confrontation with everything, now finds itself with three shipping containers filled with absolutely nothing. We’re wondering, might you be interested in some affordable “emptiness? Some “nothing” so that you might make “something”? In other words, a shop/studio space, just for you.

We realize that from the outside the Shipyard may look like an elegant golden temple, but closer inspection will reveal a rather greasy collaborative art/build space for large-scale mechanical, electronic and kinetic art. Don’t be deceived by our lusciously landscaped grounds. Peek inside and you will find most all the welders, grinders, saws, mills, lathes, forklifts, trucks, and general interesting junk that one could ever want. Guinness in the vending machine too (but bring your own dollar coins, lest you find yourself machining a counterfeit facsimile on the lathe at 3am, as is often the case of late, but don’t tell Kiki).

Now you will even find consistent power coming right out of the walls. Still off-grid, but finally pretty much transparent and just like PG&E, only more mindfully produced. 2,500lbs of inverters, 17,000lbs of batteries, 2 (bio)diesel generators, 6kw of solar panels, and several miles of magic vines interconnect and interrelate to transform the infinite potential of nothing into 33kw of industrial level 3 phase power. Or maybe it is just stupidity transformed into indulgence, excess and debt. Not really sure yet. But at least it works now.

Joining the Shipyard Sangha will get you a dedicated container studio space as well as unlimited use of our shared outdoor courtyard and indoor fabrication and machine shop. Trucks too, when they work. Rent is $300 for bottom containers, $250 for tops, all inclusive, utilities, dsl and whatnot included. We might even have a double wide bottom (shotgun not included).

All this nothingness can be yours merely by raising your hand (and successfully navigating our grueling application process). We welcome gutter punks, glitter hippies and Phd’s alike. Disgruntled hardware hackers, itinerate machinists and diesel mechanics too. All six at once even better. All six at once, combined with some gender other than guy, and your first month of rent is free.

But act fast. All this nothingness is likely to resolve into form and substance rather quickly. And when it does, it’s usually really heavy and annoying to move around.
